Artists Jury


Artists are selected by a highly qualified jury of artists, authors, critics, and collectors. Selections are based upon quality, originality, artists’ conception, and presentation of artwork and booth display. The top scoring artists in each category are invited to participate in the LJAWF.

The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival's esteemed panel of jurors for LJAWF 2011:

Kathryn Kanjo is the Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD).  Prior to joining MCASD, Kathryn served as Director of the University Art Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 2006 and was the Executive Director of Artpace San Antonio from 2000 to 2006.

Carol Romine Hawks served as the President and CEO of the prestigious Coconut Grove Arts Festival in Miami Florida, for a decade. Her experience in the art show industry brings a "Trained Eye" to the jurying process with her ability to select contemporary and classical artists, while identifying quality and diversification of technique.  Recently Carol has been involved in various projects throughout the country and abroad, always seeking new artistic adventures.

Robyn Nelson, MFA Arts Administration, is the long time Executive Director of the award-winning nationally ranked Utah Arts Festival and recognized as a leader in commissioning new works in the visual, performing, literary arts, and public art installations.  Other highlights include: co-founder of the Visual Arts Affinity Group of the International Festival and Events Association; speaker and consultant on developing arts events and programs (from Missouri to Ireland!); annually oversaw the curation of a fine arts exhibition; temporary site installations of large scale outdoor works; developed arts based training for 300 K-12 teachers to apply to their curriculum; designed numerous special visual art programs/projects and championed inter-active arts programs and hands on experiences for kids 5 – 17.

Bruce Helander, MFA, is an artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage.  He is also a well-known curator art critic and national juror.  He has a master's degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college.  He is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and recently won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts.  Bruce also participated as a juror for the 2010 LJAWF.

Caroll Swayze attended York University in Toronto, Canada with extended studies at the Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida. She is a Master Printmaker, Painter and Freelance Writer, a Charter Member of the Florida Printmakers Society and a current member of the NAIA Board of Directors. She was chosen as 1 of 10 North American Artists to participate in Japan’s first art festival, the 2009 Yokohama International Art Fair. Swayze has 42 years of Outdoor Art Festival Experience, her work is in public and private collections worldwide and she is represented by over twenty galleries.
